First Year, First Term
As a continuation of the Cube project, I started with the experiential drawing of my final cube. We were instructed to create collages of the drawing focusing on depth. Then we recollaged our collages and made connecting lines to design a pier from. Using Race Street Pier as an example of spaces created, I designed a pier that has a central path with multiple branches. The branches take you to places of focus. A space near the water has a directed view down the waterway, another space has walls built up to force you to look across the water to the other shore, while other spaces have views through ribbed structure spanning the pier.
First year, Second term
A Limestone wall stands alone in the woods for many years. As time goes by it weathers and crumbles creating holes of passage and space. Us humans want to maintain what once was, so we begin to construct a steel scaffolding structure to help preserve the wall and create support in order for it to continue standing. As time passes the wall continues to fall apart and the framing structure keeps a record of what was once there.
First year, Second term
Through a series of mediums a Folly or inhabitable lawn ornament is made. Originating as a diagram that was transformed into various relief models; then changed into a cube with moving panels. Finally the cube was simplified into 2"x 2" cubes that were arranged to create a Folly perched on the edge of a cliff.
As one walks towards the folly there is no visibility of what lies beyond it. One must have to enter and move through the maze of panels to get to a viewing platform. From here one can see in all directions off the cliff.
First year, Third term
Focusing on filling the voids and completing the city's edge down Lancaster street, I studied the forces caused by tie rods in older buildings in the area; while creating a space to observe vines growing and inter twining with the architecture.
First year, Third term
A crew rowing team is looking for a place on the Schuylkill River to store their equipment including their boats that ranging in length from a single rower to 8 person. The Boat House needs to have a workout space with locker rooms and a space for relaxation besides storage. This building is based off of a joint that represents the connection between the land and water.
Second year, First term
As I walk through the forest, the sounds and rush of mankind has left me and all I can hear are birds chirping and the leaves dancing in the wind. Purple butterflies start to join me on my walk. In the distance I see what resembles a large cocoon shaped structure hanging from the oak trees. As I walk closer I notice wood planks climbing up a tree to a rope bridge. I climb them and carefully work my way across the rope pathway. I duck as I enter the cocoon. It’s cool from the shade and I can see the shadows of leaves dancing on the canvas covering. A shelving unit has been fixed into the curved shape of the structure. I move through the space and notice a sink and sitting space. The shelves create a ladder path up the skin of the cocoon; I climb them and hanging from the ceiling is a hammock. I make myself comfortable in the hammock and watch the leaves continue to dance.
Second year, First term
A family moves from the farm to the city so that the head of the house hold can be close to their restaurant. Looking for a place that feels like the home they grew up in as well as covering their needs for space to grow vegetables, herbs, and roots while preparing, serving, and enjoying food with with others. To help with growing plants year around the back wall has been fitted with a gutter garden climbing all 3 stories with an irrigation system.
Second year, Second term
175 Micro units nestled in a preexisting parking lot with a dog park on one side, train tracks along the Schuylkill River, and industrial style apartments on the street side. Each unit is 360 sq ft with it's own outdoor balcony space. The building is constructed with prefabricated units that are stacked on site. This apartment complex includes space for 2 restaurants, outdoor entertainment, and a gym facility for residents.
Site analysis was done with classmates as a group.
Third Year, First Term
This project was a theoretical park focusing on topography, we were given a sloped site and had to add in different terraced event spaces as well as an amphitheater.
Entering the site by boat one follows a trail up a slight hill through a birch tree forest. The path follows a river that runs down hill. There is an amphitheater that is sunken into the hill side and a pavilion at the highest point of the hill. Large terraces lay out in front of the pavilion and lead to smaller secluded terraces further down the hill closer to the lake.
